Preventive Health Screens

Bone Density Screening

Provides measurement of bone mineral density. A special ultrasound unit scans a patient and identifies thinning of bones (osteoporosis), which can lead to fractures. This disease is more common in women but men also can be affected by osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which the density of the bone is reduced. It contributes to 1.3 million fractures annually in the United States, with an estimated cost of $8 billion. It is commonly referred to as the silent disease as no signs or symptoms are noticed until a large amount of bone mass has been lost. A bone density screening or scan is measured as a T-score or Z-score, which helps a healthcare provider diagnosis the condition.

Major risk factors for osteoporosis: Post-menopausal women, increasing age, tobacco use, Caucasian race, low body weight, bilateral ovary removal prior to menopause, and limited physical activity.

Benefits of early detection:

  • You can modify lifestyle habits that can reduce further bone loss.
  • You can learn about and make home modifications to reduce the risk of falls or the severity of fall-related injuries.
  • Your physician may begin drug intervention to reverse bone loss.

You and your doctor can determine if this screening is appropriate for you based on your health history and risks. The U.S. Task Force of Preventive Services does not recommend for or against this screening.
