Preventive Health Screens

Ankle/Brachial Index (ABI)

Provides a measure of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), often called artherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. PAD causes decreased blood flow to the arms, hands, feet, and legs. This results in complications from skin breakdown, pain, limb loss, and disability. PAD is responsible for 50 percent of all amputations. PAD is caused by narrowing of the arteries in the body away from the heart, aortic, and carotid, and the limit of blood flow to these areas.

Procedure: This screening is completed with the ultrasound unit. An individual lies on a table. Blood pressure cuffs and a Doppler ultrasound probe are placed on the individual’s arms and ankles. The blood pressures of the arms are compared to the legs.

Major risk factors for peripheral arterial disease: diabetes, high blood pressure (hypertension), tobacco use, age (greater than 50), and high cholesterol.

Benefits of early detection:

  • You can begin lifestyle modifications to reduce risk.
  • Your physician may provide medical intervention to treat, based on need.

You and your doctor can determine if this screening is appropriate for you based on your health history and risks. The U.S. Task Force of Preventive Services does not recommend this screening for asymptomatic individuals. However, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetic Association recommend annual screening for those with diabetes.
