Procedure: This study is completed with the ultrasound unit. An individual lies on a table. An acoustic gel is placed on the abdomen. A small transducer instrument is moved painlessly over the individual’s abdomen. The ultrasound measures the aorta and provides a visual image of an aneurysm, if one is present.
Major risk factors for aneurysm: age (greater than 60), sex (male), family history of aneurysms, high blood pressure (hypertension), tobacco use, peripheral vascular disease, peripheral arterial aneurysms, cardiovascular disease, and painful reduced bloodflow to limbs.
Benefits of early detection:
- Your physician can regularly monitor weakening in the aortic wall.
- Your physician may provide medical intervention to treat, based on need.
You and your doctor can determine if this screening is appropriate for you based on your health history and risks. The U.S. Task Force of Preventive Services does not recommend for or against this screening. Repeat screenings of those with normal test results is not indicated. Screening is not recommended for individuals who cannot undergo major surgery to repair findings, such as those with severe cardiac or pulmonary disease.
