Diabetes Education
Diabetes is a complex disease that requires daily self-management of food choices, physical activity, blood sugars, and the prescribed treatment plan.

Successful self-management will help the person with diabetes feel better and reduce the risk of developing complications including heart disease, retinal disorders, kidney disease, and nerve damage.

Diabetes educators are healthcare professionals who specialize in the care and education of people with diabetes. Some are Certified Diabetes Educators, which means they have practice and expertise in the diabetes field and have passed a rigorous national exam.

After a referral from your healthcare provider, Grinnell Regional Medical Center offers the following services:

  • nutrition assessment and medical nutrition therapy
  • training on monitoring blood sugars
  • instruction on the use of oral medications and insulin
  • Outpatient Diabetes Self-Management Program group classes.

A Diabetes Support Group is available. The group meets on the 2nd Monday of the month (except August) from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Tomasek Conference Center. All are welcome to attend and an educational topic is featured each month.
