Grinnell Regional Medical Center houses four newly renovated surgical suites and endoscope room with new modern equipment. More than just technology, The Warren H. Bower Surgical Center also has exceptional nursing staff who complement the surgeons providing surgical services at GRMC.
In 2006 GRMC fully implemented a new level of surgical quality standards, in compliance with national benchmarks. Protocols and procedures have been integrated into each surgical case, to ensure each patient has the best outcome possible.
Our surgery department is well-known for its expertise in bariatric surgery. In 2006, GRMC became the first hospital in Iowa to be accredited as a level 1a (the highest level) bariatric surgery hospital by the American Colleges of Surgeons.
GRMC’s full spectrum of care allows residents traditional surgical services as well as specialty care. Surgery is performed by a team of on-staff surgical specialists, in many medical fields: Bariatric, ENT, general, ophthalmology, orthopedic, podiatry, thoracic, trauma, urology, and vascular.
We pride ourselves on having a well-qualified surgical nursing staff. Most of our surgical services staff in the operating room, central supply center, outpatient and recovery room hold advanced certifications, such as advanced cardiac life support (ACLS).
An important aspect of surgery is the accompanying anesthesia. The Grinnell Anesthesia team works with patients regarding their preferences. We offer general, local, and epidural anesthesia options, with the goal of providing a safe and pain-free surgical experience.
Technological Highlights

The panels are wired to a Picture Archiving Communication System (PACS) so the images can be electronically accessed in real time by other physicians/surgeons for consultations.
- Inpatient recovery bay for 5 patients with exceptional staff who help ease patients out of anesthesia and prepare them for their hospital stay.
- Waiting room for family and friends with plenty of natural light and area for volunteer information center.
The Warren H. Bower Surgical Center was named in honor of Dr. Warren Bower, surgeon of 33 years at GRMC and a leader in advancing surgery in the area.
